Ira Rose — A Life in Jewelry
For over fifty years, Ira Rose has been the heart and soul of Cottage Jewelry. What began as a young traveler's curiosity for the world's most beautiful objects became a lifelong vocation — one built on trust, expertise, and an unwavering dedication to his community.
Born and raised in the Chicago area, Ira developed an early fascination with gemstones, metals, and the artistry behind fine jewelry. After studying at the Gemological Institute of America, he set out on the journey that would define his career — and his life.
From India to Evanston
The winding path from world traveler to Evanston's most trusted jeweler.
In the early 1970s, Ira embarked on an extended journey through India, Nepal, and the Near East. Along the way, he discovered a world of craftsmanship that Western markets had never seen — intricate silver filigree from Rajasthan, hand-cut gemstones from Sri Lanka, ancient goldsmithing techniques passed down through generations.
He returned to Evanston in 1973 with trunks full of these treasures and a vision: a small shop where he could share these extraordinary finds with his neighbors. He found a quaint former Pure Oil station on Dempster Street that literally resembled a cottage — and the name stuck.
What started as an eclectic collection of global jewelry quickly evolved as customers came to trust Ira's eye and his honesty. They began asking for engagement rings, anniversary gifts, custom designs. Ira responded by deepening his expertise, studying diamonds and precious stones with the same passion he brought to his travels.
Decade after decade, the shop grew — but the personal touch never changed. Ira still greets customers by name, still remembers what they bought for their twentieth anniversary, still gets excited when a perfect stone comes across his desk. He has sold engagement rings to couples whose parents he also served, creating a multi-generational legacy of trust.
Today, Cottage Jewelry is recognized as one of Evanston's most cherished institutions. But ask Ira what he's most proud of, and he won't mention the accolades or the decades. He'll tell you about the relationships — the families who've trusted him with their most meaningful moments, year after year.
