Diamond Education

Understanding the Four C's

The universal language for evaluating diamond quality. A little knowledge goes a long way — let’s talk you through it. Want the full story? Read our North Shore buyer’s guide to the 4 C’s and our honest take on lab-grown vs. natural diamonds.

Cut

The most important factor. A well-cut diamond reflects light brilliantly regardless of color or clarity. We source only excellent and ideal cuts.

Color

Graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). For most settings, a G–H color is near-colorless and indistinguishable to the naked eye — ideal value.

Clarity

Natural diamonds have inclusions. VS2–SI1 stones are eye-clean and a smart choice — the difference from FL is invisible without magnification.

Carat

Weight, not size. A well-cut 0.95ct looks larger than a poorly-cut 1.0ct. We'll help you balance carat with the other Cs for the best result.

What Our Couples Have To Say

“

Ira helped me design a custom ring that was absolutely perfect. He understood exactly what I was looking for — she said yes before I even finished the question.

We spent an afternoon at Cottage Jewelry and never once felt rushed. They educated us, showed us options in our range, and the ring was ready ahead of schedule. Exceptional.

Sarah & James K. — Chicago, IL
“

The staff are wonderful and the ring selection is gorgeous. We have been coming here for years and wouldn't go anywhere else. You can't find a more honest jeweler than Ira.
